Adding Flowers … and a plant

It’s time to fill the vases with flowers and add images to the picture frames – your bookshelves are finally filling up!  You can use the pattern that I’ve designed as a guide, or you can use any of the designs provided in the Steady Thread weekly patterns for 2020 or 2021.  You could also design your own patterns! (use graph paper or excel to chart your design)

The chart

Tips and ideas:

Use different colours of floss for different parts of the flowers, add beads or French knots as filling stitches, add leaves or other greenery.

Try out different types of embroidery threads – ie:  I used Rainbow Gallery Whisper for the pussy willows (filled in with a few straight stitches).

Subtly shade the background in the picture frames with a single strand of floss – ie:  tent stitch over 1, running stitch over 1 (every second stitch), etc.

The potted Plant (the top far left pot)

Stitch the stems of the plant – use stem stitch, back stitch or whipped back stitch (I stitched using whipped back stitch with the wrap using 2 strands of thread).

Note:  the lines on the chart are just a guide – you can put the stems anywhere you like.  Add as many (or few) as you like.

Add leaves to the stems using lazy daisy stitch in a dark green colour, using 2 or 3 strands of green floss (I used 3 strands).

I found that using 3 threads on the leaves made the plant look a little too heavy for the end of the shelf.  If I was to make another, I would add less leaves and use 2 threads instead.
