The inspiration for this project came to me during one of my frequent web dives. I have always been a Tolkein fan – what better a way there would be to stitch a wee bit of the Hobbit lore!
There are a few different versions of the map on the web, but I was drawn to this version. I love how Smaug stands out in red. I also wanted to add some of the words and annotations from the map into my piece. I transferred the design to fabric using a light pad and brown micron pen (003).
This piece is about 5″ by 5″ in size and was stitched with 1 strand DMC floss using satin, split and backstitch. Base fabric – antique Rogers Sugar sack (cotton). It will become a page in one of my embroidery journals.
